What is Pilates?

The Pilates method is an exercise system focused on improving flexibility, strength, and body awareness, without necessarily building bulk. The method is a series of controlled movements performed on specially designed spring-resistant exercise apparatus (the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Spine Corrector, the Ladder Barrel, and the Wunda Chair) or on the floor (mat work), and the sessions are supervised by specially trained instructors.

Pilates is resistance exercise, not aerobic (cardio), although the heart rate will certainly rise for a de-conditioned individual. However, it’s closer to weight lifting than it is to jogging, biking, or other aerobic activities, and so you should consider it resistance exercise.

Origin of the name “Pilates”

The term Pilates has been coined after Joseph Pilates who was a gymnast and bodybuilder, professional boxer, circus-performer, and self-defense trainer at police schools and Scotland Yard. During World War I, he taught wrestling and self-defense and began refining and teaching his minimal equipment system of mat exercises that later became “contrology”.

Joseph Pilates moved to the US in late 1920s and opened his gym in NYC. He taught until the age of 83 when he died in 1967.

How is Pilates different from other fitness regimes?

Pilates are specific ordered exercises which are performed on apparatus that have particular dimensions and resistances as designed by Pilates. The main difference between Pilates and other forms of exercise is balance. Balance in strength and flexibility. The aim of Pilates is to give your body the desired level of flexibility, fitness and strength.
